Redesigning a morning routine with data

Map the process, test two targeted changes, measure five trials of each, and prove the improvement. A small system, treated with the same rigor as a big one.

01 · Context

The problem

After moving to a new place for a London study abroad, my old morning process stopped working. So I treated it like any other process problem: I fixed the sequence, tracked it for a week starting Sunday, June 7, and used that baseline to test improvements.

The baseline sequence, from the moment I wake up:

Two targeted changes

Instead of overhauling everything, I went after the two slowest and most variable parts of the routine.

Change 1 · Time-boxing

Timers in the bathroom

Showering and shaving ate the biggest chunk of the morning. A 10-minute shower timer and a 5-minute shave timer cap the bathroom at 15 minutes. The limit stops the lingering without rushing the result.

Change 2 · Shifting work upstream

Prep the night before

Clothes get laid out each evening, and breakfast becomes grab-and-go (overnight oats or a premade smoothie). The decisions move to the evening, when there's time and energy, and vanish from the morning rush.

03 · Results

Five trials each, no overlap

Every improved trial beat every baseline trial. The improved process was also far more predictable: a 4-minute spread instead of a 13-minute one.

What the numbers say

The average dropped from 43.6 to 29.4 minutes, about 14 minutes saved every morning. Just as important, the variance collapsed. The baseline's worst mornings hit 49 and 50 minutes, usually from a slow start or a distraction. The improved trials stayed in a tight 28-to-32 band because the structure removed the places where drift happened.

The timers never lowered the quality of the routine itself. Showers stayed thorough and shaves complete, so the time came out of lingering, not out of the work. The night-before prep helped more than expected: deciding on clothes and food in the evening cut the mental clutter, not just the minutes. Even on the one trial where I forgot the timer, the routine felt smoother than baseline.

05 · Reflection

Why this matters beyond breakfast

The changes were small. The method is the point: map the current state, find the slowest and most variable steps, redesign, and verify with tracked results. That loop is the daily work of operations and supply chain roles, and this project made me confident I can run it, whether the process is one person's morning or a team's workflow.

Process improvement isn't only about speed. The improved routine was calmer and more organized, and that consistency turned out to be worth as much as the 14 minutes.

I came away thinking of continuous improvement as a habit I want to keep, at work and at home.
